How to Research Keywords for SEO

To create an effective SEO strategy, you need to do keyword research. First of all, make sure, that your website doesn’t have any problems with your content, that can hurt your rankings in search engines.

Do your researches, depending on your organic and paid search traffic, backlinks, ranking keywords and competitors. You need to understand the market, that’s why you can also use some specific websites, that can give you all necessary data, if you give them your website URL.

If you already have any keywords, that helped you to get a high enough rank in search engine result pages (top 10 or at least top 20), you must use them as the foundation of your future SEO strategy. Don’t forget about CPC (cost-per-click), it shows how paid search costs for that keywords, which can help you estimate their value for you.

Another important factor for your strategy is volume. The higher is your volume, the more searchers are going to see your page when they search for that particular keyword.

But remember anyway, high CPC or volume doesn’t always indicate, that a keyword is valuable to you and your business. Keyword research depends a lot on industry, sphere of your activities, location and many other factors.

Some keywords may be lousy. They can have vey little searches per month. But if they are somehow connected to your business, then it still must be used. These types of keywords have low competition, and are very targeted, because anyone who searches for it automatically becomes a potential customer.

Ideally, you must target keywords that have good volume, are relevant to your business, and have a high potential for conversion. Look for patterns in the keywords. You can use them in future to form your content strategy. For small business SEO, it’s usually best to focus and concentrate on few topics only, that are most capable of bringing customers to your website. Always keep business model of yours in mind.
